Sixteen steps

Sixteen steps it takes me to walk from your hospital window to your ward room door

Sixteen steps before I turn around and walk back across the floor.

In Sixteen steps I can hear the tick tock of the bedroom clock

In Sixteen steps I hear the regular beep of the machine next door

In Sixteen steps I can hear the generators whirring outside

In Sixteen steps I can see the nurses walk by.

In sixteen steps I listen to every breath you take

In Sixteen steps I listen to the sounds you make

In Sixteen steps I listen for only you.

In sixteen steps we are trying to not wake momma

In sixteen steps we are trying to help you sleep

In ten steps we stop. You start to wake.

In no steps, I bundle you close and you grab my face.

In six more steps you’re back to sleep as we pace.

Sixteen steps because we won’t hit any windows and doors

Sixteen steps for my eyes have been closed

Sixteen steps and we’re nearing two am

Sixteen steps in and we’ve been doing this for hours

For sixteen steps I rock you in my arms

For sixteen steps we walk nice and calm

For sixteen steps I assure you everything will be ok.

In sixteen steps, we do not stop at the door.

In sixteen steps, we turn around,

and do sixteen more.

In sixteen steps, nothing else matters in this world but you, your brothers, your momma and me.

In sixteen steps, you will feel free.

In sixteen steps, you are close to me.
