Oh wait, no I’m not, I’m actually sick of reading news articles or blog posts such as one titled recently “Your cell phone has already replaced your watch, camera, calendar, and alarm clock. Please don’t let it replace your friends and family”
I don’t know where all this garbage comes from. I mean seriously think about it.
- I never used to wear a watch (and therefore was also often late).
- I never carried around a calendar / diary.
- When I was traveling, digital cameras were non existent and I couldn’t afford to carry an SLR (or cheaper, crappier version) around with me (and my first camera was stolen!).
- And, well, I’ve always woken up early, so alarm clocks were rarely needed.
Then technology was upgraded, rather quickly over the last “few” years and:
- I still don’t wear a watch, but now I have one in my pocket (though I might need to get one for triathlon day…)
- I know what we’ve got planned for the next year with my phone diary
- I can take pictures wherever I go – better than i could 15 years ago (I’m no pro).
- I can take video and have it edited by the time i get home (who’d have thunk it huh?)
- I can even play music from that same device, rather than carrying a discman and a MASSIVE folder of CD’s. I used to have to take everywhere.
- I can make plans with friends, from pretty much anywhere in the world.
- If I’m away, I can make video calls with my boy, so we can chat about what me / he is up to.
And that’s not even the start of it. The possibilities are endless.
Ok, so in some cases, people can’t seem to do anything without having their phone out in front of you/ them. Those people need help… but tech (although not always!) has helped enhance our lives. Not get in the way of it. You just have to learn to embrace the useful stuff and forget the useless, as you have done with every other change that’s happened around us over the last 000’s of years!
Sorry, tech rant over, get back to looking at something else on the device you’re reading this on now whilst not speaking to anyone around you.
